Summer Car Servicing. Is It Necessary?
Car breakdowns do actually increase when we go on long summer holiday trips. After being used all year going and forward to work each day the car is used to doing just short trips. The pressure builds up when we use it for a long journey potentially at a higher speed over a longer time and the car cannot cope.
In this free downloadable report below Scott tells of a motorist friend and his wife who prepared thoroughly for a long driving holiday around east France.
Unfortunately they had forgotten about booking a car service here before they left Ellon. It was too late afterwards. Things did not go as planned. They paid out nearly a thousand pounds extra during that ruined holiday trip simply because the summer car servicing had not been done before leaving.
When we only use the car for short commuting trips back and forward to work it is not being pushed very hard. It learns to cope. We don’t notice the faults that are developing slowly over time.
Effectively the car becomes like a couch potato doing as little as necessary without being pushed to its extreme limits. Instead of relatively short runs when the summer holidays come round we take it out for a marathon run to visit distant relatives or simply get away from it all.
Imagine if you were used to used to doing a little exercise on a regular basis each week. Just enough to go to work or go shopping. You then find yourself running in the Glasgow marathon race. Do you think you could cope? Your heart or your muscles would give up. You would be be finished before the race was finished.
When you suddenly take the car out on what could be seen as a marathon run the pressures build up. Any existing faults you have perhaps a radiator leak and or engine slightly overheating goes unnoticed normally. Over a long distance at higher speed the faults start to become bigger. That is when the car breakdown is likely to happen. You packed everything you needed but forgot about checking the car was fit enough to do that long run.
We have noticed over the years that working in our high performance car tuning clinic that cars being pushed harder begin to develop other faults. We now know what to look for and rectify it as part of a normal car servicing appointment before a breakdown can occur.
